Hair Transplant

Hair Transplant @ AnyClinics

Hair Transplantation is a surgical procedure that transforms hair follicles from one part of your scalp (usually the sides and back of your head) to the balding area of your scalp. This process is the most effective and long lasting because the hair follicles used are taken from areas that are genetically resistant to baldness.  Hair transplants are used to treat male or female pattern baldness without showing any signs of treatment.

When having a hair transplant, if it is carried out correctly the outcome can look very natural. It is important to choose the correct procedure and clinic for you.

Hair Transplant Procedures

Procedures have improved over the last few years, offering smaller grafts, and an increase in hair being extracted and transplanted. There are two different FUT (follicular unit transplantation) procedures that you can choose from, Strip and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). The main difference to these two techniques is the way the follicles are extracted. The leading feature of both techniques is the extraction of the smallest natural hair groups, the follicular units, or FUs for short. Each of these anatomical units generally consists of 1 – 4 hairs. Both techniques – Strip and FUE – make use of these natural units.

  1. The Strip Procedure is a technique where a strip of the scalp including hairs is taken from the back of the head. This procedure is done under local anesthetic so little discomfort is felt. The tissue is dissected in order to extract the follicular unit grafts. Each graft is individually inspected in order to select the healthy grafts to be implanted and then the grafts are carefully placed into the scalp. The small opening where the skin is taken from is closed using stitches which can usually come out after 7 days.
  2. FUE is the procedure when each individual follicular unit is extracted directly from the scalp and they are then grafted one-by-one into the bald areas of the head. This procedure can be a lot more time consuming and costly. Each individual follicular unit is extracted using a 0.8-1.0mm drill and are taken from the sides and back of the head. These hairs are then implanted individually into the patient’s balding areas. Rather than a line scar there will be a large number of small dot scars.

Number of Grafts needed

The amount of hair grafts needed depends on the individual’s level of hair loss and baldness. Your physician will be able to best advise you.

After care

After the hair transplant procedure your physician will provide you will detailed instructions and information on the care of your new transplants. You may also be prescribed some pain killers to ease any discomfort once the local anesthetic has worn off.

The Results

A few weeks after your surgery, the hair that was newly transplanted will fall out, however beneath this, you should start to see new growth appearing. The follicles that have been transplanted to the balding areas are resistant to going bald.

The Cost

Prices in the UK can vary widely. It depends on the clinic you choose, which surgeon and how many grafts are needed. It is strongly advised to have one or two consultations to gain a better understanding of what process and pricing is best for you. In the UK prices can start from £1500 and upwards for the Strip procedure and £2.50-£3.00 per hair, with an average procedure costing around £9,000 for FUE.
